If a tile slides against a blocked tile of equal value, they merge at the position of the blocked tile, which then combines the values of both tiles. Player must choose a direction (left, right and bottom) on each turn, after which all tiles that move in that direction will move until they are stopped by the side or by another tile. The player can move the tiles collectively, but cannot control them individually. The playing pieces are called tiles, and each tile occupies one square of the grid. The game is played on a square playing surface with a 4×4 grid. The game can be played in the browser, but there are also apps for Android and iOS. The name refers to the game objective: the player merges tiles with increasing values until a tile with a value of 2048 appears. It is a sliding puzzle on a four-by-four grid, based on Threes and Fives. Nineteen year old developer Gabriele Cirulli created and published this game on github in his spare time. 2048 is a computer game that came out in March 2014 and became very popular within a month.
